- Sunderland - on the couch!

| Clear vision, agreed direction and measurable outcomes...? |
Well It's that time again - sit back, turn the mobile to silent and take a minute to absorb the alternative perspective on our industry that is KKP News.
In this edition we are back on our strategic soapbox - concerned about agencies that jump on the initiatives bandwagon without stopping to think about when the journey ends. (Does the disruption of providing some of the most costly ‘free' swimming in history come to mind?)
A real concern is the national adoption of the total myth about the participation drop-off at 16. Voluntary (as opposed to curricular) involvement at sport, particularly for girls, starts to fall away when they ‘cross the playground' from primary to secondary school and continues to fall from thereon in. How can we base key strategy outcomes on such a tenuous premise - when half the market has already ‘voted with its feet'?
This frustration is eased somewhat by clients looking to break the mould; those that, in the words of our favourite high street bank are looking for "another way." We feature a couple, notably Somerset and Sunderland, who are working on genuinely holistic approaches to strategic planning.
Finally, I must tip my cap to ‘the Baroness' on her appointment to the House of Lords. As a long time critic of the absence of ‘end-product' of agencies she is involved in, it is also only right to acknowledge that Sue, arguably the ‘marmite' of our industry, is one of the hardest working and most devoted individuals. She is already, by a mile, the sector's most astute politician and the key player in public sector sport.

Claire Fallon - Lead Consultant (Open Spaces)Strategic planning is at the core of KKP's suite of services. PPG17 brings new challenges to the development of planning policy for open spaces, moving away from formulaic and increasingly irrelevant generic standards. KKP has an extensive portfolio of PPG17 open space and playing pitch strategies and has delivered more than 50 such studies. Claire Fallon leads the team responsible for delivery of this vital work. She is currently supporting local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales as well as developers including Persimmon Homes and GVA Grimley. This public and private sector experience of both sides of the process places Claire at the forefront of contemporary challenges. Claire firmly believes that KKP's approach leaves clients with strategies of a higher standard, based on the most comprehensive and detailed evidence base within the sector. Our consultation methods guarantee a true view to ensure that future direction is based on strong foundations. Claire strongly endorses the emphasis on locally derived standards to protect and enhance the local environment. "We work hard to persuade planners to embrace this new system and realise what quality plans can do; in particular to secure developer contributions." The introduction of LDFs will place local authorities (in England) in a stronger position to influence the sale and re-development of land to the benefit of local residents. Expansion of our portfolio in Scotland and Wales also signifies the growing recognition of the value of this new way of shaping local communities. |

Billie Jean King the first ‘professional' winner of Wimbledon scooped a prize of £750, two thirds of the then average annual wage in UK. Venus Williams the 2008 winner claimed a prize of £750,000, more than 30 times today's average annual wage.
It is now virtually impossible to purchase leather football/rugby boots for children - they are all running around in brightly coloured but often completely inflexible footwear; time to retrain as a chiropodist!
