Wigan Council (WC) has commissioned Knight, Kavanagh & Page (KKP) to undertake an open space, sport and recreational facilities needs assessment and audit for the Borough.
KKP's highly respected, staged approach and methodology recognises the five step approach to carrying out an open space needs assessment and strategy as outlined in PPG17 guidance. A fundamental element of this is community consultation. In Wigan it will consult with more than 100 key officers, agencies and stakeholders and a conduct a street survey of 800 residents. Particular attention will be paid to looking at ways in which provision of open spaces can contribute to the vision for Wigan - a place where people matter and you can afford to live the life you want and delivery of identified priorities. A key focus for consultation will be staff from Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust, which works on behalf of Wigan Council to manage and support leisure and cultural facilities, initiatives and events for the 300,000 residents in the Wigan Borough.
KKP is ideally placed to deliver this project having undertaken similar projects for neighbouring councils. WC will benefit from company knowledge and understanding of the wider Greater Manchester region as well as its strong, proven track record in open spaces. In recent years KKP has undertaken PPG17 open space assessments and developed playing pitch strategies in Bolton, West Lancashire, Warrington, Salford and St Helens. The dedicated team of consultants, led by Claire Fallon, will draw upon its extensive practical experience to provide WC with clear strategic pathways for improvement, investment and protection of open space provision.
