Culture, arts and leisure minister Edwin Poots has named North Down Borough Council as the preferred bidder to build Northern Ireland's first 50m swimming pool. The council's bid to build the pool as part of a £40m leisure and aquatics centre in Bangor was approved by Sport Northern Ireland after an open competition.

Knight Kavanagh & Page (KKP) is delighted to have played a part in North Down Borough Council's recent successful bid to build Northern Ireland's first Olympic sized pool.

KKP researched and produced the sports development plan that underpinned swimming usage and occupancy figures and the impact predictions related to both community participation and elite performance aspects of the Bangor 50m Pool.  This was used to support the bid submission to the Sport Council for Northern Ireland.

The facilities will include a 10 lane 50m pool, a 5m diving pool, strength and conditioning suites for swimmers and headquarter facilities for Swim Ulster.

Clare MacLeod, Principal Consultant said, "North Down's success is testament to the hard work and dedication of the Council team, its partnership with national and local swimming bodies and other stakeholders involved. The new pool will be a valuable asset to sporting organisations, associated community agencies and the local community".
