Analysing role, function and impact

The Irish National Coaching and Training Centre (NCTC) recently commissioned Knight Kavanagh & Page (KKP) to conduct a review of its role, function, structure and impact. The review considered the NCTC's current vision, purpose, programmes and practices.

The NCTC provides support services to Ireland's athletes, coaches and national governing bodies of sport (NGBs). These services presently include coach education, sports science and medical support, training camps and facilities and the administration of the national carded (talented) athlete scheme. The Centre, headquartered at the University of Limerick, works in the context of the Programmes of the Irish Sports Council.

KKP's approach was phased; incorporating face-to-face consultation with key players and stakeholders, facilitation of a workshop to discuss ideas and challenges raised in more detail and a report back to stakeholders highlighting key outcomes and recommended actions.

This approach, proven to be successful on other projects of this nature, worked effectively and has provided a launch point for the new strategic plan for coaching presently being developed.

Commenting on the review, Michael McGeehin, Director of NCTC said, "KKP's thorough review is the start of the process via which we shall ensure that we have in place effective governance and management to deliver our commitment to the development of coaching and supporting performance in Irish Sport. Building upon its recommendations, we are continuing to nurture, and build upon, our working relationships with NGBs, the Irish Sports Council and the newly established Ireland Institute of Sport."
