Carrick District Council appoints KKP to provide PPG17 compliant assessment

Knight, Kavanagh & Page (KKP) is to provide a PPG17 compliant sport and recreation facilities assessment for Carrick District Council (CDC) to examine the provision, quality, distribution and use of sport and recreation facilities within the local authority area.

It will include a comprehensive audit of indoor sports provision, non-pitch facilities and youth facilities, to identify the number, size, type, quality and location of facilities and access to the sites. KKP will provide a detailed assessment report together with a strategic framework for improvement and development and, if appropriate, rationalisation of provision.

Particular reference will be made to the Council's Community Strategy which has identified demand for more opportunities for leisure activities, particularly for young people. This assessment will identify a framework (and specific action) to achieve this. Provision for informal recreation - particularly for teenagers is key to this project. Assessment of ‘youth facilities' will also identify opportunities for informal recreation.

Additional factors such as transport, housing and building schools for the future developments will also be considered. Lead consultant, Jonathan Woods said, "Extensive indoor and all-weather facility development throughout the district could significantly enhance community provision and attract considerable interest from, for example, sports academies. We shall help CDC and its partners to identify how the facilities could best be operated to safeguard use by the community and to ensure their long-term financial viability."
