Is the new Government going to be good for our sector?

As we sit out the 'murdah' of post 'purdah', John and the KKP team discuss the likely impacts of the election result so far and predict what may be to come...

  1. Increase sports' share of Lottery from 16% back up to 20% - Yes, preferably with a focus on local authority capital projects.
  2. Emphasise competition within and between schools - No, there is plenty: need to give priority to opportunity provided outside the school system and physical literacy of the rest of our young people.
  3. Plans to develop Olympic/Paralympic style school sport competition - No, just more competition for the same young people!
  4. Bring UK Sport, Sport England and Youth Sport Trust under the same roof! - Yes, but we may need to redefine the term ‘infighting'.
  5. A Major Sports Events Bill to make it easier to win and host major events - Yes, as long as we do not, at the same time, allow the local infrastructure needed to take full advantage of such events to be decimated.

And what else?

  • Planning legislation designed to shift power from regions to local communities ....depends upon how we define ‘local'. Whatever is decided, it must be addressed quickly or there will be a policy vacuum which could be very damaging.... Chirs MacFarlane
  • Prince William to front playing fields campaign - good news. The aim to ‘create' more than 1,000 new playing field sites is commendable. Although it may not be as headline grabbing, if a decent proportion of existing provision was upgraded, there would, in many areas, be more than sufficient provision... Claire Fallon
  • New proposals for schools and more academies. Irrespective of the format that schools development takes, Government must be stronger defining and enshrining affordable access to sports and other community facilities in the future.... Louise Hunsley
