A network plan for sports provision

Using a combination of detailed site visits, extensive consultation and comprehensive GIS based mapping analysis, KKP has developed a new network plan for provision for the ABCD New Deal area, located to the south of Wolverhampton City. The facilities network identified will ensure strategic utilisation of the built facility, outdoor sport and natural resources of the area to accommodate and encourage increased participation and improved health.

Based on identified local demand, a sub-network of local area fitness facilities (LAFFs), community area fitness facilities (CAFFs) and outdoor fitness facilities (OFFs) was developed to ensure that all residents have access to good quality facilities ranging from a multi-use sports centre to a well-maintained pitch or MUGA.

As well as identifying possible investment opportunities, the study identified associated issues, including the need to

  • Appoint staff to improve the organisation and co-ordination of the various interest, community, education and local groupings in ABCD (at the same time reducing insular attitudes, provision and practices.)
  • Develop the ABCD sport and physical activity workforce, to directly increase the qualification and competence levels of coaches/instructors/ volunteers in the area.
  • Improve understanding and appreciation among local people (plus key agencies and decision makers), of the value and benefits of sport and physical activity and the infrastructure supporting it.

The outcome of the study will be the creation of a legacy of quality sport and recreation facilities with the associated infrastructure to deliver sustainable opportunities accessible and available to ABCD residents.
