Consultation is the key to play

KKP's work in developing a play strategy for West Lancashire focused on developing political support for play development and provision and to place play more centrally in terms of contributing to improving the overall quality of life in the District.

The focus of consultation was to secure ‘buy in' from partners in the area. This has resulted in the establishment of a co-ordinated network of key partners, to oversee play provision and development, linked to the local strategic partnership.

Key strategy areas implemented are enhancement of the ‘playdays' programme for 5-8 year olds, additional school holiday programmes at key locations (e.g. crime hotspots) and introduction of an integrated outreach programme to provide diversionary activities.

Facility based recommendations included moving away from small play sites in favour of improving larger facilities (linked to better equipment and encouraging local involvement in site management) and providing a wider array of options including street sports facilities, youth shelters and multi-use activity areas.

The strategy has been successful in securing greater political support for play. Capital funding has been provided by the District Council and an additional half a million pounds of external funding has been secured. The focus on inclusion and engagement has provided a strong basis for West Lancashire District Council's application to the Big Lottery Fund.
