Developing a facilities strategy for South Somerset

KKP's assessment of sport and recreation facilities in South Somerset during 2005 culminated in production of a facilities strategy for the District Council.

The strategy is based on extensive consultation and a thorough audit of facilities. It identifies gaps in current provision and actions to remedy them, including use of planning obligations and Section 106 agreements. It will provide the basis for improving existing and developing new sport and recreation facilities in the area.

KKP consulted both elected members and officers in District and County councils, local residents (of all ages), facility managers and parish/town council representatives in South Somerset in order to identify demand for provision.

It also conducted a survey to identify the relevant concerns and opinions of leisure centre and community facility users.

The audit comprised assessment of sports halls, village and community halls, multi-use games areas, swimming pools, youth facilities, synthetic astroturf pitches, bowls greens and tennis courts, amongst others.

One proposed outcome of this comprehensive study is to develop a "sports zone" in Yeovil. Currently many facilities in the area are attached to schools and hence use is restricted. The new planned "sports zone" will not have to face the same restrictions and will provide the community with greater flexibility.
