In October 2006, the brand new sports facilities at Litherland Park in Sefton opened for the first time. KKP played a key role in securing £1.3 million from the Big Lottery Fund (through Active England) and £1 million from the Football Foundation towards the £5.5 million total scheme cost.
The scheme provides a mix of facilities from Sefton's first synthetic athletics track to grass pitches, a full size synthetic pitch, cycling and walking routes.
KKP's initial role in the scheme was to submit plans and a bid to the Football Foundation. This successfully generated £1 million of external funding.
The advent of the Active England programme provided an opportunity for the core partners (already brought together through the Football Foundation bid process) to lever additional funding to realise their ambitions for Litherland Park.
KKP supported Sefton MBC and the other core partners through the Active England funding process, ensuring that partner aspirations were presented in a realistic, pragmatic manner that gave the scheme the maximum opportunity for success.
The innovation at the heart of the scheme is built around the pavilion, which houses a fitness suite and multi-purpose activity rooms as well as the traditional changing room block. The rooms are used by South Sefton PCT clinicians to run clinics and other health services. The linkage between this and the facility mix on-site provides a simple GP referral scheme and a wide range of different opportunities in a severely deprived area.
The scheme is an excellent example of how sports facilities and health provision can be joined to cater for the needs of a deprived community. At its core was the strong partnership developed between Sefton MBC, South Sefton Partnership, South Sefton PCT and a range of other local bodies.
